Hello fellow Fanpoppers, we’ve been so busy adding new features and improving Fanpop that we’ve neglected the good ‘ol Fanpop blog (whoops).
Nevertheless, I wanted to officially announce two new features for you:
- The Fanpop Soapbox: The Soapbox provides fans a way to post their thoughts, musings, opinions or anything else to a given spot. Feel free to get up on the soapbox when you’re upset that a new tv show that hasn’t lived up to the hype, or you’ve got a specific idea about how to watch the Star Wars trilogy or when you just want to tell the world about a cool little startup’s humble beginnings
. It’s easy to do and a great way to drum up a conversation with fellow fans. For people who don’t maintain a regular blog or just want to be heard by an immediate audience of readers who share the same interest, Soapbox is the perfect venue to be heard.
- Personalized RSS Feeds. Tired of checking the site for the latest updates in your subscribed spots? Now you can go to your personal profile page (click on the “my page” link when signed in) and look for the orange rss button next to “my spots”. This will take you to an rss feed that has all the latest updates from the spots you are subscribed to. To further customize the feed, simply join other spots.
We’ve also made a host of other performance and small UI enhancements across the site. Many of these changes are based on direct feedback from all of you. So thanks for all the ideas and encouragement to date. We’ve got a lot of other cool new stuff up our sleeves in the coming months and will keep you posted on things as they happen…

Since launching Fanpop earlier this summer, I’ve had the good fortune to see much more of the web than I have in a long time (courtesy of the Fanpop 100). Sharing my own discoveries with other fans as well as checking out those recommended by my peers has been thoroughly enjoyable. It has also taught me a little more about what makes a good site and – perhaps more importantly – it has reminded me what makes for a bad, bad, bad website. As a result, I’ve become even more acutely aware of the things that really, really piss me off as an end-user.

No, I’m not talking about Heroes, the awesome new show on NBC, I’m talking about my personal heroes. One of the perks of starting a little company is that you have an excuse to reach out to people you’ve admired from afar. I’ve gotten to talk to and meet Paul Graham, the founder of Viaweb which later sold to Yahoo! and the man behind YCombinator. If you haven’t heard of Paul before, I highly recommend reading his inspirational essays. During the early stages of forming Fanpop, his essays were extremely helpful and insightful. They give very practical and tangible tips for anyone thinking about starting a tech company.
Another person’s writings and advice that inspired me was Guy Kawasaki, the managing director of Garage Technology Ventures and the chief evangelist for the Macintosh at Apple Computer. His blog, Signal Without Noise, was a constant source of entrepreneurial wisdom and guidance. The thing I loved about his book, The Art of the Start
, and blog was how real and matter of fact they were. He calls bull shitake when he sees it. He cuts through all of the fluff and got right to the point. His down-to-earth Hawaiian personality was clearly evident throughout his writing. It was so refreshing to hear such honesty and candor. Check out this keynote speech he gave that gives you and idea of how cool this cat is.

We’re long overdue for another Fanpop list from our popular Viral Videos Spot so I thought I’d throw together some mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, how-the-heck did-they-do-that videos displaying just how amazing the human mind and body can be. Otherwise known as the “holy crap!” videos. Some are musical, some are athletic, and some are just mind-boggling. Enjoy!
15. Amazing Soccer Goal
The title pretty much says it all. The goalie must feel pretty dejected after this one.
14. Guitar Kid with Chops
This is a pretty famous video that went around the web of a mysterious kid who plays a wicked arrangement of Pachelbel’s Canon. Turns out he’s a 22 year-old Korean guy. Kid or adult, he plays a mean guitar.
13. 720 Dunk
You’ve heard of 360 dunks, but check out this kid pull off a 720 (okay maybe it’s really only a 540 but still!) dunk in the middle of a game!
12. Unbreakable
Not that you’d ever want to get hit by a speeding car while riding your bike or scooter, but if you did, you’d want it to happen like this.
11. Dude Surfs Massive Wave
I’ve seen waves, but this was like a tsunami. This guy either has huge cajones or a death wish. No idea if he makes it out alive or not.

Hi Fanpoppers. Just wanted to announce a few new features that we’ve rolled out on the site to make your Fanpop experience even better:
Invite a Friend & Share Link
We’ve now made it easer to tell your friends about Fanpop and share the favorite links you discover on the site. Look for “invite a friend” and “share this link” on the spot pages and the link comments pages.
The Fanpop Bookmarklet
A number of fans have been asking us for this, so I’m glad we could oblige. For the uninitiated, a bookmarklet is simply a snippet of code that you can drag and drop onto your browser’s bookmarks toolbar (don’t worry, there’s no spyware or any arduous installation).
It can be found on the ‘add a link’ form as well as on the Fanpop FAQ. I’m also posting it here for your convenience:
- Internet Explorer users: Right click on the ‘Add to Fanpop’ image below to add it
- Firefox and Safari users: Drag the ‘Add to Fanpop’ button below onto your browser bookmark bar

I can’t believe that Fanpop has been live to the world for a month now. It’s been surreal watching the site grow with new users registering each day and fresh content being added all the time. We’ve been blown away by the attention we’ve gotten in the blogosphere (you can follow along with all the fun over at The Fanpop Spot. I guess it’s still a little weird for me to see Fanpop come up in headlines on my Google RSS Reader from sources that I’ve been reading for a long time now like TechCrunch, Mashable!, John Battelle’s SearchBlog, Emily Chang Read the rest of this entry »

Note: Due to the feedback we’ve received on the first two lists (Time Wasting Web Games and Wacky Japanese Videos), we’re continuing this series on a weekly basis. This week’s subject is a perennial favorite: animals.
Since we launched Fanpop earlier this month, the Pets & Animals Channel has really taken off. Now I’ll have to admit, that when we started, I was a bit skeptical about the Pets & Animals Channel. But once we started to see users post links about guinea pigs, hamsters, pigeons and hamsters, I was pretty well convinced. There are a LOT of animal lovers out there.
Of course all the while I’ve been watching, enjoying and laughing at all the crazy animal videos that the pet fans have submitted. Not since watching ‘Those Amazing Animals’ back in the 80′s (I’m showing my age aren’t I?) have I been treated to such a spectacle of animal talent. Among the many excellent clips I’ve been treated to are a few that I’ve watched over and over (often laughing out loud in the process). So without further ado, I present the Top 5 Funny Animal Videos on Fanpop.
5. Hamster Wheel Gone Wrong
This one is short and sweet and oh-so-cute. I dunno why, but it makes me smile everytime I see it.

In whatever spare time I have outside of Fanpop, I’ve been trying to keep up with my reading. I’ve been reading Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay for the past few months because I can’t seem to find any breaks to finish it (I knew I shouldn’t have started a 626 page book if I didn’t have time to read it!). It’s a fantastic book by the way. The other book I am in the midst of finishing is Chris Anderson’s eagerly-awaited book The Long Tail. I had already read many of his articles and some of the pre-published book on his blog and was really excited to get my hands on a copy. The wait was well worth it especially in light of the Fanpop launch.
The gist of the book is basically about how technology and innovation has changed the game. Over time, the invention of things like the Gutenberg printing press, the Sears catalog and the Internet, that distribution and customization have allowed the diversity and variety of supply to meet the breadth and myriad of demand. It’s been fascinating to read Anderson’s analysis of the power of the niche and how meeting the needs and demands of the few can be as impactful creating a huge hit for the many. It kinda makes me think of how Google is perfect for the masses in the fat tail because it’s so simple and convenient. I see Fanpop as letting people create hundreds and thousands of little Yahoo’s and filling out the long tail. We were confident that there was a need for this type of platform when Papa and I conceived of the idea for Fanpop. But seeing it in action has blown both of us away. We had no idea that there were so many fans of rats or hamsters. I’m finding out about bands I’ve never heard of from near and far like Kaiser Chiefs and Cud from the UK or the Dutch band the Gathering. I’m learning about books that I should be reading like the “A Song of Ice and Fire” and “His Dark Materials” series.
The more we saw Fanpop grow this first month, the more we realized that there’s a real need for community portals like these for anything and everything. So many of these fans don’t really have a place to share and commune about their passion. We’re just happy we could help them find a home and even better to help others discover new interests that they may never otherwise have been exposed to. I mean I just found out that Nicole Kidman is starring in the movie adaptation of the His Dark Materials series which I had never heard of until Fanpop!
We firmly believe that by creating the right platform of tools and features that allow for a community of fans of any given topic of interest, that people will be drawn and the mavens and pied pipers of each of those communities will lead them here. We’ve already seen that happen for many different spots through forums and blogs all over the world. From fans of pigeons to Gaia Online, people are spreading the gospel of Fanpop every day. We couldn’t ask for better ambassadors than the devoted fans themselves. Fanpop wouldn’t be what it is without the passion of the fans.
I can’t wait to see what new bands, books, tv shows or places to travel you all will open my eyes to next!

When we created Fanpop, we had no idea what spots would become popular. The uncertainty was actually one of the things that made it so fun and exciting. What would people be attracted to? Which fans would be the most passionate and vocal? What kinds of spots would pop up on the site? Well the people have spoken. It looks like our most popular spots is our Viral Videos Spot. We created this spot when we felt like there was just too much garbaggio to sift through on YouTube, Grouper, Google Video, iFilm, Vimeo…the list goes on and on. Apparently, so did all of our users. So not to be outdone by Papa’s top 6 (what a nice random number Papa) web-based video games we’ve seen on Fanpop, I’ve decided to pull together my top 5 wacky Japanese videos. Why Japanese videos you might say? Well because in a word, they are insane. Americans couldn’t even come up with some of this stuff because it’s just that ridiculous. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, heck props to them for being so creative! But not even Jackass would come up with games like getting hit in the nards for messing up a tongue twister or exposing people to the world when sitting on a port-a-potty. We just don’t come up with stuff like this. And this my friends, is why I present, the Fanpop Top 5 Wackyiest Japanese Videos:
#5 Silent Library
Ever wonder what it would be like to tick off the librarian and all the other library patrons by making your friends crack up or scream in pain by making them breath in stank foul air (aka “Bad Smell Air”) or by smacking them silly in the face with a Slapping Machine. No? Neither have I, but the results are hilarious. The large black man that sticks out like a sore thumb is Dutch world kickboxing champ Ernesto Hoost.
